Research Toolbox

Welcome to my most-used resources! Tracing family history requires the right tools to break through brick walls. Over years of research, I have come to rely heavily on these core platforms, archives, and regional databases to verify historical records.

Essential Core Database
Tools to Protect and Back-up your Research
  • External hard drive (don't store it with your computer--if your computer is lost or damaged, you need to have the hard drive in a safe space.)
  • Cloud storage
    • Google Drive
      • 15GB free storage - more for a monthly rate
      • Organize documents and photos in folders
      • Collaborate with family
    • DropBox
      • 2GB free storage - more for a monthly rate
      • Sync specific folders directly to your computer's hard drive while maintaining cloud copies
      • Share massive collections of old family photos and historical documents with others without hitting email limits.
      • Also works offline
    • Backblaze (This is what I use and it has paid for itself!)
      • Backs up files automatically - no more "I'll do it tomorrow."
      • Runs in the background and backs up your entire computer hard drive (including all genealogy software files and databases).
      • Great if you have large amounts of files, photos, and videos and don't want to worry about losing them.
      • Low monthly fee for unlimited storage for one computer.
